| The origins of the first stained glass windows
are lost in history. Certainly, by the 10th century, depictions of biblical
scenes were found in French & German churches, with decorative designs
found in England. One of the earliest records, by a monk named Theophilus
circa 1100 AD, outlines a “how to” for craftsmen – it
describes techniques & methods little changed in over 900 years! GOTHIC STAINED GLASS STUDIO was established
in 1998, outside Tuam, Co. Galway, Ireland, its aim to continue this age-old
handcrafted tradition. Specializing in architectural stained glass, we
produce authentic leaded panels (large & small) for the private, commercial
& ecclesiastical sectors, mainly on the western seaboard, but with
many commissions throughout Ireland.
Projects to date have included the design
& creation of a special commemorative bi-centenary window, which incorporates
a panel by artist Evie Hone (1894 -1955), at St. Jarlaths' college, Co.Galway,
which was unveiled at a special ceremony in 2000 by President of Ireland,
Mary McAleese.
“Aside from the repair & restoration projects, I have created
many designs, both modern & antique reproduction, to compliment interior
& exterior doors & windows in homes, pubs, restaurants & hotels.
The materials used on GOTHIC STAINED GLASS panels define them as individual
& unique works of art. I use only authentic *antique glass in my work
(*antique- referring to the age-old techniques employed by skilled artisans
in Europe & U.S.A. to handcraft each piece of glass I select). Whether
mouth-blown or gently machine-drawn, this antique glass gives GOTHIC STAINED
GLASS DESIGNS a remarkable quality & texture that will present your
home or business in the best possible light.”
